Arulmigu Mailam Murugan Temple, also known as Mailam Murugan Temple, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, situated atop a small hill in Mailam, near Tindivanam, Tamil Nadu. The temple is approximately 40 kilometers from Pondicherry.
Historical Significance: The temple is believed to have been constructed during the 9th century AD by the Pallava dynasty and was later renovated by the Chola and Vijayanagara dynasties. The temple complex spans around 2.5 acres and features several shrines dedicated to various deities, including Lord Murugan, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Durga.
Legends: According to legend, after Lord Murugan defeated the demon Surapadma, the demon sought redemption. Moved by his plea, Lord Murugan instructed him to meditate as a peacock on the hill, leading to the establishment of the temple.
Temple Architecture: The temple is situated on a hillock resembling a peacock, with abundant Nochi trees (Chaste Trees) surrounding it. The main deity, Lord Murugan, is depicted in a wedding posture with his consorts, Valli and Deivanai.
Timings: The temple is open from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. On Fridays and Sundays, it remains open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM without a break.
