The Auroville Earth Institute (AVEI), established in 1989 with support from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) of the Government of India, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the research, development, promotion, and transfer of earth-based building technologies. These methods are recognized for their cost-effectiveness, low carbon footprint, and minimal embodied energy, making them sustainable choices for construction.

Key Objectives and Activities:

Training and Capacity Building: AVEI offers comprehensive training programs in earthen architecture, focusing on techniques such as compressed stabilized earth blocks (CSEB) and the design of arches, vaults, and domes (AVD). These courses aim to empower individuals to construct their own dwellings using sustainable methods.

Research and Development: The institute engages in continuous research to innovate and refine earth-based construction techniques, striving to blend traditional skills with modern technologies. This approach ensures the durability and efficiency of earthen structures.

Global Outreach: AVEI has extended its expertise to 36 countries, promoting and disseminating knowledge in earth architecture. Through its initiatives, the institute has trained over 13,000 individuals from 88 countries, fostering a global community committed to sustainable building practices.

Recognition and Awards: The institute’s contributions to sustainable architecture have been widely acknowledged, earning 15 awards, including four international and eleven national honors.
