The Matrimandir, located in the heart of Auroville, Tamil Nadu, India, is a central edifice dedicated to individual silent concentration and meditation. Often referred to as the “Soul of the City,” it embodies the spiritual aspirations of Auroville, a universal township founded on the principle of human unity.
Design and Architecture
The Matrimandir is a geodesic dome with a diameter of 36 meters, covered in golden discs that reflect sunlight, giving it a radiant appearance. Its design symbolizes the birth of a new consciousness, emerging from the earth.

in the last weekAuroville, the gardens, and the Matrimandir are a place for inspiration and contemplation. Both the philosophy and vision of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother are deeply moving and transformative. From an architectural point of view, both the attention to detail and the spirit of place are unparalleled. The shops at the visitors' centre offer unique local pieces of art, textiles, and precious books. Make sure to visit at least once in your lifetime and to book a short concentration time slot at the Matrimandir (separate booking service, free entrance with mandatory booking, no cell phones allowed). Marvellous!

in the last weekDon't waste your time, energy and money. Utterly disappointing. Does not make any sense. We suffered from extreme dehydration after slogging there for almost an hour..unclear pathways, crowd...the dome is miles away from the viewpoint. We had high expectations. If you are like us, please consider twice before heading to the place. DANGER DANGER.

in the last weekOne needs to walk roughly a km from the parking area just to get a glimpse of the golden globe structure. The walk can be tiring and painful especially when it rains. There is no proper transport facility as well. It's not worth visiting here just to see the building from far, but if you enjoy the walk and climate is good, go for it!
