in the last weekAs former residents and now Pondicherry regulars, we are familiar with every street, every hangout, every restaurant and every eatery worth its salt, particularly in and around the White Town neighbourhood. Having sampled most of the better-known Continental and European eateries (with mixed reviews), we decided to get a little off the beaten track and opt for a Chinese outlet this time. Driving around White Town, it is impossible to miss the Flaming Dragons Lounge & Nightlife, set at the corner of La Bourdonnais Street, with its prominent signage and the ever present dragon motif splashed across the entrance wall, screaming ‘Oriental !!’. The entry is rather narrow, and the doorpost pretty high, typical of the ubiquitous French architecture evident around in this part of town. Enter, and you get immediately transported to a bright and loud world of flaming dragons, crouching Chinese Tigers, loud neon lights, multi-coloured psychedelic decorations, Chinese lanterns, Chinese artworks, Chinese letterings, and pretty faces of Chinese damsels giving you the ‘looks’ ! The colour theme of the interiors is predominantly red/scarlet, and the décor is a tad overpowering to the senses. I guess, over the weekend, with a few good spirits down and after some serious carousing with friends, the same ambience has every opportunity and possibility to transform itself into a vivacious and a pulsating nightspot. As is their wont, the waiters tried hard to make us occupy the seats downstairs, to save themselves the bother of climbing up and down the steep flight of stair. We chose the upstairs hall, which as completely empty. The precipitous climb up a steep flight of stairs was the only downside. Be aware that the place does not hand-out printed Menu Cards. You are directed to scan the QR code on the table and run through the extensive items listed on the menu. The lack of physical menus felt like an unnecessary hurdle for a hungry diner. We found it quite cumbersome and time consuming. Having gone through that unnecessary ordeal, let me share with you the food menu here, only to make your life easier should you ever decide to visit ‘Flaming Dragons’. The drinks menu is very exhaustive. So, I shall refrain from posting them here. Coming to the dishes, as we always do, we chose a dish each from Soup, Sushi, Noodles, Dimsum, and Gravy. The ‘Thai Orange Seafood Hot and Sour Soup’ was thick. There was less of seafood and more of assorted veggies and corn flour in it. The ‘Chicken and Carrot Dimsum’ came with the waiter’s recommendations as the preparation time is lesser than the rest on the menu. The ‘Chicken Teriyaki Maki Sushi’, with the dipping sauce served in a chipped bowl was good. The highlight was the ‘Khow Suey Chicken Noodles, served with spicy seasoned Coconut Curry Broth’. It was served with crushed peanuts and Chilli Flakes for added punch. The Coconut Curry Broth stood out for its unusual flavour and uncommon taste. It would be expected and would be normal had we ordered the dish in a specialty Malayali restaurant. But we were in a proper ‘Chinese’ restaurant and to get a thick coconut infused broth was a welcome change ! The other mentionable dish was the ‘Shredded Beef in Hot Chilli Oil’. It was fiery and pungent as one would expect. We paired it with plain steamed rice to balance out the flavours. The ‘Fresh Lime Soda’ was pretty pedestrian. The real sting, however, was the 325% mark-up on a standard can of Coke — priced at ₹170/- (which is sold outside for ₹40/-) ! It wasn’t even served chilled. The dishes are all priced slightly on the higher side, given their portion sizes. The menu states clearly that a meal for two would cost approximately Rs. 1,800/-. So it doesn’t come without its warnings.

a week agoHit Flaming Dragons for dinner last night. LIIT and Mudslide cocktails hit right; strong pours, good balance.Smoked Pepper Pork (off-menu gem): Awesome flavors, smoky and tender. Standout dish. Dumpling bowl (Chinese New Year special): Soupy single dumpling in small bowl. Good but very filling. Hookah available for fans. Overall: 4.5/5. Bold spot for cocktails and surprises. Prioritize the pork.
