The Irumbai Shri Maha Kaleshwar Siva Temple, also known as the Irumbai Mahakaleswarar Temple, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in the village of Irumbai, approximately 10 kilometers from Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu, India. This temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, revered in the early medieval Tevaram hymns by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Sambandar.
Historical Significance: The temple is believed to have been constructed over 1,200 years ago, with references in the hymns of Tamil poet-saints.
Architectural Design: The temple features a central sanctum housing the main deity, Lord Shiva in the form of Mahakaleswarar. The architecture reflects traditional Dravidian styles, with intricately carved pillars and sculptures depicting various deities and mythological scenes.
Festivals and Rituals: The temple celebrates several festivals, including Prathosam, Shivaratri, Karthigai, Brahmotsavam, and Thaipusam. During these occasions, the temple is adorned with vibrant Rangoli kolams and flower decorations.
Timings: The temple is open daily from 6:30 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
