The Old Lighthouse in Pondicherry, constructed in 1836 by French engineer L. Guerre, stands as a testament to the city’s maritime history. Originally a 29-meter tall structure with 12 oil lamps, it guided sailors along the Coromandel Coast. In 1913, the oil lamps were replaced by an electrical rotating beam, enhancing its visibility to 21 nautical miles.
After ceasing operations in 1979, the lighthouse was converted into a museum, offering insights into its history and the region’s maritime heritage. Visitors can explore the museum and enjoy panoramic views of the Bay of Bengal from the lighthouse’s observation deck.
