Our Lady of Angels Church, also known as Église Notre-Dame des Anges, is a historic Roman Catholic church located in Pondicherry, India. Situated on Dumas Street in the White Town area, it is the fourth oldest church in the city.
History and Architecture
Constructed in 1855, the church was designed by architect Louis Guerre in Greco-Roman style, inspired by Notre-Dame in Paris and the Basilica at Lourdes. The original structure was entirely white, earning it the nickname “White Chapel.” Over time, the exterior and interior colors have changed, but the church remains a prominent landmark facing the Bay of Bengal.
Cultural Significance
Unique among Pondicherry’s churches, Our Lady of Angels Church offers Mass services in three languages: French, Tamil, and English. This multilingual approach reflects the city’s diverse cultural heritage.
Visiting Information
The church welcomes visitors daily from 5:30 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. There is no entry fee.
