The Sri Gangavaraaga Natheeswarar Temple, also known as the Gangaivaraga Nadheeswarar Temple, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in Thirukanji village near Villianur, approximately 15 kilometers from Pondicherry, India. The temple is uniquely positioned on the southern bank of the Sankaraparani River, also referred to as Varaga Nadhi, which is considered to have the sanctity of the Ganges River.
Historical Significance: The temple is renowned for its association with nine Siddhars, revered saints in Tamil Shaiva Siddhanta tradition, who are believed to have attained Jeeva Samadhi (spiritual liberation) near the temple premises.
Architectural Design: The temple complex features a central sanctum housing the main deity, Lord Shiva in the form of Natheeswarar, with his consorts Meenakshi and Kamakshi. The architecture reflects traditional Dravidian styles, with intricately carved pillars and sculptures depicting various deities and mythological scenes.
Festivals and Rituals: The temple hosts several religious events, including daily poojas, special rituals on full moon days, and the Ganga Aarti, a significant evening ritual performed to honor the river goddess.
Timings: The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The Ganga Aarti is typically performed in the evening, around sunset.
