Located in Pudukkuppam coastal village (near Eco Beach / Gangaiamman Kovil Street, off East Coast Road north of Puducherry), Sri Karaneswar Nataraja Temple is an architectural marvel built in the precise proportions of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Originally constructed in 1989 by Dr. Karan Singh and rebuilt after the 2004 tsunami, the temple is designed so that the apex concentrates cosmic energy onto the deity, Lord Nataraja. Set amidst quiet coastal gardens near the sea, it offers a harmonious blend of traditional Indian spirituality and unique sacred geometry

The Sri Karaneswar Nataraja Temple, commonly known as the Pyramid Temple, is a distinctive Hindu temple located in Pudhukuppam, approximately 12 kilometers north of Auroville, near Pondicherry, India. This unique temple is renowned for its pyramid-shaped architecture, inspired by the Great Pyramid of Giza, and is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Nataraja form.

Architectural Design: The temple’s pyramid structure is a notable feature, setting it apart from traditional temple designs. This design choice reflects a blend of ancient Egyptian and Dravidian architectural styles.

Historical Background: Originally constructed in 2000 by Dr. Karan Singh, the then Chairman of the Auroville Foundation, the temple was rebuilt after the 2004 tsunami. The reconstruction was led by Satprem MaΓ―ni from the Auroville Earth Institute.

Spiritual Significance: Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, the temple serves as a serene place for meditation and spiritual reflection. Its tranquil environment is enhanced by the soothing sounds of the nearby beach.

Timings: The temple is open daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Entry is free for all visitors.

Things to Do & Visiting Tips

  • Meditation: Because it sits a stone’s throw from a quiet stretch of beach, the rhythmic crashing of the waves creates a soothing natural ambient backdrop perfect for quiet meditation and self-reflection.
  • Other Shrines: While Lord Nataraja is the primary focus, the complex also houses smaller statues of Lord Ganesha, Lord Murugan, a Shivalinga, and a small Nandi bull.
  • Footwear Warning: Be aware that you must remove your shoes before entering. Reviewers note to watch out for stray dogs around the outer steps who occasionally wander off with left-behind footwear
