The Sri Kokilambigai Udanurai Sri Thirukameswarar Temple, commonly known as the Gokilambal Thirukameswarar Temple, is a revered Hindu temple situated in Villianur, approximately 11 kilometers from Pondicherry, India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Thirukameswarar and his consort Parvati as Gokilambal, the temple is renowned for its rich history and architectural grandeur.
Historical Significance: The temple is believed to have been constructed during the 12th century, with later additions from the Medieval Cholas and the Vijayanagar Empire. Inscriptions from Raja Narayana Sambuvarayar (1339–63) indicate that he donated around 850 acres to the temple, irrigated by the Ossudu Lake.
Architectural Design: The temple complex spans two acres and is enclosed by concentric rectangular granite walls. The central shrine houses the lingam of Thirukameswarar, and the shrine of Gokilambal is located around the first precinct. The temple also features shrines dedicated to Vinayaka, Murugan, Navagraha, Chandikeswara, and Durga.
Timings: The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The daily rituals are performed at 8:00 AM (Kalasanthi), 12:00 PM (Uchikalam), and 6:00 PM (Sayarakshai).
