The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Pondicherry is a prominent landmark known for its Gothic Revival architecture and historical significance. Located on the South Boulevard, it stands as a testament to the city’s rich colonial heritage.
History and Architecture
Consecrated in 1907, the basilica was designed by French missionaries and showcases a blend of Gothic and French architectural styles. The structure measures 50 meters in length, 48 meters in width, and 18 meters in height, forming a Latin cross when viewed from above. Its interior is adorned with 28 stained glass panels depicting events from the life of Christ and various saints.
Mass Timings
The basilica offers Mass services in Tamil and English. On weekdays (Monday to Saturday), Mass is held at 6:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 6:00 PM. On Sundays, services are at 5:30 AM, 7:30 AM, and 12:00 PM in Tamil, with an English Mass at 5:00 PM and a Tamil Mass at 6:15 PM.
Visiting Information
Visitors can explore the basilica’s stunning architecture and serene ambiance throughout the week. There is no entry fee. The church is open to all, regardless of religious affiliation, and photography is permitted.
